Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
Catholic Priests | Gospel of Luke | Jesus | The Good Shepherd
“What man among you having a hundred sheep and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and go after the lost one until he finds it” (Luke 15:1-10)? How can one not often feel lost in this crazy world? And at times, we can be so painfully aware of our failings and sins.

Immaculate Heart of Mary | Venerable Patrick Peyton | family prayer | pray the rosary
In 1917 the world was at war and Europe was the battlefield. On the periphery, far from the centers of power, Our Lady chose to reveal her message of Peace to three young shepherds in the Portuguese countryside. On another part of that periphery, in rural western Ireland, lived another boy about the same age. He too was being schooled in that message in his poor but happy home as they prayed the Holy Rosary every night.

Chucuito is the name of the remote rural parish in the Andes Mountains of Southern Peru, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, where I was assigned as a deacon, before being ordained a priest. I thank God for how my 3 years there as a young priest formed me in profound ways. My first Feast of All Souls there was an amazing experience.

This healing of a paralytic is a beloved and striking miracle. We can imagine the house where Jesus was staying in Capernaum packed with people; and then all the commotion when they were lowering the guy through the roof, and even more when he got up, picked up his mat, and walked out!

I hope and pray you love your parish Church! I hope it’s a beautiful space and that you feel at home there. As restrictions are lifting, we all should be going back to Sunday Masses in our parishes in as much as one can safely go. Some places this may not be possible yet, and for some people it still may not be safe. Our local parish churches should be beautiful…I don’t mean lavish or luxurious, but rather places of peace for celebrating the Eucharist and the Sacrifice of the New and Eternal Covenant.
