Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
Behold Your Mother | Family Time | raising kids in the faith
Imagine the scene: Months after her Son’s Resurrection and Ascension into Heaven, the Blessed Mother sits in the home of the beloved disciple, surrounded by a small group of Christ’s followers. Having spent, at best, three years with their Messiah, these new Christians are eager to learn more about Him. Mary quietly and humbly shares the stories of the Annunciation, her visit to Elizabeth, and Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem. She tells of Christ’s childhood growing up in Egypt and then Nazareth, the harrowing search for Him on the road from Jerusalem, and that time they both attended a wedding in Cana.

family life | family prayer | pray the rosary
Week after week my teenage son and I drove the same 22 miles to the chemotherapy infusion clinic. The last few miles were on a main road in a nearby city. When we turned onto this road, we passed by the big box stores and the fast-food restaurants before driving through the old downtown area, which now houses rundown homes and quirky local businesses. The last stretch of road runs through the gentrified area: the theater, cute shops, and the most highly regarded restaurants in town. Just beyond lies the hospital which was our destination (and beyond that, a university). I thought I knew this road.

As I got to the end of today’s gospel from St. John, I had one of those aha moments, an answer to something I think most of us wrestle with … why does God allow certain things in life to occur? I’d bet that, by now, all of us have a list of things that we’d categorize as: “This just doesn’t seem right or fair.” And, among our faithful brothers and sisters, I’ve heard it said, “Well, one day, if I make it to Heaven, I’m going to ask Jesus a lot of questions!”

Holy lives of inspiration | Seasonal Reflections
On Ascension Thursday, we gather to reflect on the final moment of Jesus' earthly life—the moment He ascends into heaven. How did the apostles live through these last moments of Jesus with them? Just think of how the apostles felt—just a few years before, they were living perfectly ordinary lives with families, friends, village, or neighborhood communities along with day-to-day routines that they followed almost without thinking, just as we do.
