Today's Feast of the Presentation, also known as Candlemas, has multifaceted perspectives. Do we discuss the mother's purification after birth, the thanksgiving and offering for the gift of a new child, or the child's dedication to God? Or the revelations of Simeon and Anna? Or Candlemas and Jesus as the light to the nations?

During our children’s time in elementary school, there was always something happening – a full calendar of things to anticipate. We supported them through book reports, spelling tests, math problems, poems to memorize, and performances to prepare. There were also faith matters, prayers to remember, holiness to embrace, and mysteries to ponder.

Many years ago, the country that we currently know as Southern Sudan did not exist. It was part of the greater Sudan. The northern and southern Sudan are culturally and religiously different. The north is predominantly Arab and Muslim, and the south is predominantly Sub-Saharan African, and largely Christian. These cultural and religious differences became triggers of long-term conflicts between the north and the south of Sudan. Many Southern Sudanese ended up growing up in refugee camps in Uganda and the neighboring countries.

None of us likes being laughed at. It hurts our pride. So, we are usually careful not to take risks which could cause others to laugh at us. When it comes to our faith, we are especially careful not to risk ridicule. But today we see Jesus and two other people who dare to risk ridicule with regard to their faith.
