In the month of May, we traditionally reflect on the role of Mary, Mother of Jesus. Through the centuries, believers have oriented their prayer to meditate on many titles for the Virgin of Nazareth. This year, I find myself drawn to “Queen of Peace.”

Different countries around the world have different animals or plants as their national symbols. The United States has the bald eagle – a symbol of strength, courage, immortality, and freedom. India has the peacock as its national bird – a symbol of grace and beauty. Haiti has the hibiscus as its national flower – a symbol of beauty and culture. Bangladesh has the water lily as its national flower – a symbol of birth, resurrection, purity, and majesty.

Recently, I’ve been hearing from people that they’d like to experience peace in their families, themselves, and their communities. It seems like, as a whole, we’re pretty wound up. I am sure you could tell me plenty of reasons for it: driving a car pretty much anywhere, the constant bombardment by alerts on our phones, and the use of phones and tablets as on-demand news and social media sources.

In 8 AD, Ovid, a Roman author, penned a story about Greek Gods Zeus and Hermes, who took on human form and visited a thousand homes in Phrygia seeking hospitality. Zeus and Hermes disguised themselves as human travelers in Phrygia. They go from house to house searching for food and lodging but are refused a thousand times.

Behold Your Mother | Blessed Virgin Mary
A few years before I gave birth to my daughter, I had consecrated myself to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, using the method popularized by St. Louis-Marie de Montfort. The consecration meant that I had handed over my temporal goods and my spiritual blessings to the Blessed Mother with the hope of drawing closer to not only Mary but to Jesus as well.

Behold Your Mother | pray the rosary | seasons of motherhood
Today we will pray the Fifth Joyful Mystery: The Finding of Jesus in the Temple. The Fifth Joyful Mystery touches mothers on many levels. Unborn babies in the womb are hidden to us, but very much a part of us. We feel them there, but long for the moment we can hold them in our arms. In some ways (illogically perhaps, but humanistically) we feel we can protect them when they are in our embrace. This doesn’t change from day one until the last day we have with them in our lives.
