There was a sentence in the worship aid Magnificat that said, "Christ loves us because of who He is, not because of what we do." It was followed by another that said, "we do not earn Christ’s love by proving our goodness, nor do we lessen our love with our failures." Lent for many has been a time for introspection and seeking reconciliation.

Imagine what Lazarus is experiencing, brought back to life by Jesus from four days in the tomb. What overflowing gratitude must have filled his whole being. Now, with Jesus in their home in Bethany, what is he thinking as he sees how the presence of Jesus fill not only his heart, but Mary’s heart, filled with joy and gratitude for restoring her brother to life, as well as restoring her soul to grace.

“Why is this night different from all other nights?” asks the child as his family celebrates the Passover supper, as all observant Jewish families have done each year for 3300 years –since Moses led the Hebrews out of slavery in Egypt. This is not merely a common remembering; each Jewish person at the supper is to take the event as present, as a personal experience of the liberation. This is a way of remembering is that is woven into the Holy Scriptures: as God’s saving works are remembered, they indeed become present to us. God continues to save His people. In the Old Testament, the ritual of the Passover is the most intense example of this kind of remembrance.

Last week, when I was in India visiting my mother, I also visited a former classmate living in my neighborhood. He and his wife had recently lost their 24-year-old daughter Shami shortly after she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. This loss was devastating not only for her parents but also for the entire village.

Our youngest child, now an adult with a family of his own, will turn forty-two years old this week. I don’t know if it’s a bigger passage for him or us. I remember he was born on Easter Monday. We anticipated an Easter baby, but the timing of birth, as we know, is according to nature’s time. “Timing is everything,” as the expression goes. I suspect there are things about birth and life that both our children have learned as parents that we could never have adequately explained when they were growing up.
