Last weekend in the NFL, the Buffalo Bills faced the Pittsburgh Steelers in frigid conditions with temperatures around 17 degrees in heavy snow and high wind gusts. In another game, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Miami Dolphins in Kansas City, where the temperature was a bone-chilling negative 4 degrees with a wind chill of negative 27. There is an undeniable allure to sports that attracts crowds from all strata of life.

In this region, we are well into winter. We’ve had snow, rain, and gusty winds. I must admit a particular delight with the snow, even in light of the effort needed to clear it from walkways and driveways. There’s a fascination with the luminous brightness of newly fallen snow that covers and highlights the landscape.

How can we get to heaven? Or, as the rich young man asked Jesus, “Teacher, what must I do to obtain eternal life?” Of all the New Year’s resolutions, a recommitment to asking and acting on that question is the most important one we and our family members can make.
