The Irresistible (54-Day) Rosary Novena as a Powerful Intercessory Prayer

Many people have written on how powerful the Rosary is as a method of intercessory prayer and a way to honor our Blessed Mother in imitation of our Lord Jesus, but not as many are aware of the great efficacy of praying the Rosary in a novena form for 54 consecutive days.

Need for Intercessory Prayer

The world is in desperate need of intercessory prayer. We don't always stop to think about how powerful our prayers are before God, but Jesus knew this and thanked our Father for always hearing His prayers. We can too. Intercessory prayer can come in many forms. While the Rosary is only one of those forms, it is a very powerful one, as our Mother Mary is praying with us for our intentions.

Efficacy of the Rosary

When Saints Dominic and Alan LaRoche promoted the Rosary, they understood how powerful this was and the necessity of promoting this prayer. Saint John Macias prayed daily for the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Modern-day Saints like Saint Pio of Pietrelcina (Padre Pio) and Saint Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) understood that many graces were given through the intercession of Mother Mary as they prayed the Rosary, so they prayed it almost constantly.

A devotee to the Rosary his entire life, Father Peyton knew the power and grace of making this devotion part of your daily life. He would travel the world speaking to millions on the importance of praying the Rosary.

History of the Irresistible (54-Day) Rosary Novena

Fortuna Agrella, a young girl who lived in Naples, Italy, was suffering intense pain, and her family had tried everything. In desperation, they began a novena of rosaries on February 16, 1884. Our Lady of Pompeii appeared to her on March 6 and told her to make three novenas to obtain her petition. When it was finished, Fortuna was cured. In his book, The Woman Shall Conquer, Don Sharkey writes, “Soon after that, Our Lady appeared again. This time she said, whoever desires to obtain favors from me should make 3 novenas of the prayers of the Rosary in petition and three novenas in Thanksgiving.” ( page 75). So that's 5 decades each day for 27 days in petition and 27 days in Thanksgiving, a total of 54 days.

Using This Novena as Intercessory Prayer

This Rosary novena consists of 27 days of Petition (where we ask something for a particular person, situation, or need) and 27 days of Thanksgiving (where we give thanks for the prayers answered, even if we don't see them answered already). We can pray this novena for the Holy Souls following the same guidelines.

During the 27 days of petition, we state our specific request (s) and pray faithfully for those intentions for 27 days. During the 27 days of Thanksgiving, we will be assuming that our prayers and petitions have been heard and that God will attend to them in accordance with His most holy will. We assume, as it says at the end of the Divine Mercy chaplet, that His will “is love and mercy itself,” so whether we receive the answer to our petitions in the way or the time that we wanted or they are received in a different way and/or at a different time than we thought, we know they are being heard and answered. Essentially, we are praying for God's will.

Practical Application

Many people have followed the structure of finishing the novena on a Marian feast day, a very good and honorable practice. For example, you would begin on August 15^th to finish on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary (October 9^th). Or, begin on October 16th if you want to finish on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8^th).

After so many years of praying the 54-day Rosary novena and having trouble keeping track when I start on a random day in a random month, I found a super practical way to orient myself to where I am in the novena with very little trouble, and it has been a lifesaver for me. I simply start on January 1^st,  and then every 2 months, I am ready to start a new 54-day Novena. I know that I will have six 54-day rosary novenas in a year, beginning on January 1, March 1, May 1, July 1, September 1, and November 1.

Since 54 days is just short of the 61 or 62 days that two months normally comprise, on the last extra days of the month after I’ve finished, I pray the rosary for a special person, intention, or for special graces.

These are very easy to put on my calendar. To do so, I go to January 1 in my Google Calendar, I click on Add an Event, and type “Begin New 54-Day Rosary Novena.” I click the All-day toggle. Then I click on the “Does Not Repeat,” and a drop-down appears. From the drop-down, I click the button that says, “Every year.” Since I put spiritual things like this in Graphite color, I changed the default color to graphite. Then I press “Save.” I go to March next, then likewise, for May 1, July 1, September 1, and November 1. When I have completed 6 months, they are permanently on my calendar for the following years. As long as I'm faithful to my daily Rosary, I can pray this novena for many years without worrying about tracking anything.

Remember:

Write out your intentions in a special place on your phone or computer, and post a 3x5 card or sticky note in a conspicuous place on the first day you begin a new rosary novena (the first day of these 6 months or whenever you begin if you choose a different method). This will help you focus on the novena from day to day. You can set new intentions for each novena, depending on the needs of those you are praying for and whether the prior novenas have been answered.
