Christine Hanus shares a touching story about the providence of God during a distressing time in her life. Luke's Gospel prepares us for the birth of Christ with the story of the angel Gabriel visiting the Virgin Mary. When Our Blessed Mother says her historic, momentous, earth-shattering “yes” to God, and agreed to be the mother of the Messiah, she had little idea that she would become the spiritual mother to all of God’s children. Whoever calls the Father “Abba,” becoming an adopted brother or sister of Christ, is taken into Mary’s maternal heart forever. As my own children were growing up, it seemed that materialism, immorality, and noise surrounded our family on every side. My husband and I tried to help my children navigate the world, but as our two oldest approached middle school, I worried for their happiness and safety.

In his sermon, St. Bernard begins by identifying three “comings” of the Lord.

I’ve often struggled to make sense of Mark’s account of Jesus and the Canaanite woman who falls at his feet asking for Him to cure her daughter (Mark 7: 24-30). And Jesus’s response? “Let the children be fed first. For it is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” The quick-witted and perhaps desperate Greek mother flips it back on Jesus “Lord, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s scraps.” What a comeback! Jesus applauds her faith and wisdom, telling her that her daughter is healed.

It’s Easter Season! So, why do I feel like I’m still in Lent? Go to Christ in prayer to make all things new! Easter is a season of ongoing resurrection. It is a celebration that starts with one glorious morning but cannot be contained in a single day, so we continue celebrating the Easter Season. We know Lent is 40 days, and if you are like me, you feel each one. However, we forget that Easter is 50 days, and we are shortchanging ourselves if we are not rejoicing in it!
