Today, we are gathered here, my brothers and sisters, to commemorate the faithful departed. The first reading says, all the faithful departed shall abide with the Lord in love. We are here to prayerfully remember our loved ones - friends, family, neighbors, people we knew and some we did not know - who have already gone to the Lord. We celebrate their lives and thank God for the time we spent with them here on earth. We pray that God gives them good rest and peace. We pray that their lives remain an inspiration to us who are still on pilgrimage here on earth.

Suppose you are a mother or father working two jobs every day to meet the needs of your family. You seldom socialize with your former friends and classmates to spend more time with your children. Instead of buying new clothes for yourself, you save the money for your daughter's birthday celebration. Then, one day, your daughter says: "Mom, Dad, give me a sign that you truly love me." How would you feel?

Today’s readings are meant to cause us to focus upon the day of the Lord, drawing near, for the fullness of the Kingdom of God. In seminary, I remember the priest professor over and over writing K.O.G. in caps to stand for the Kingdom of God, and at first, I took it to be only in heaven.
