In 1917, the world was at war and Europe was the battlefield. On the periphery, far from the centers of power, Our Lady chose to reveal her message of peace to three young shepherds in the Portuguese countryside. On another part of that periphery, in rural western Ireland, lived another boy about the same age. He too was being schooled in that message in his poor but happy home as they prayed the Holy Rosary every night.

In some countries of the world searching family history has become popular. I’ve watched a couple of television programs that have researched the family history of some well know personalities, and even the personalities have been surprised to discover who was in their family tree.

Recently, I read a thought-provoking book titled: “It Doesn’t Hurt to Ask.” It’s based on the idea that if you want to persuade someone to believe in your perspective, you can lead them there by asking questions. The author contends that we should also ask ourselves questions - questions about what we believe and why; whether it has to do with morality, ethics, or our faith.

Last Saturday I went on a personal pilgrimage. It was the birthday of my beloved Aunt Mary who died years ago, and I realized that I was way overdue for a visit to her grave and the graves of my grandparents, about an hour from here, near the Church of my childhood.
