We are here because we have heard a promise of peace and we have faith that its day will come. We have heard a rumor of justice and we have faith that its day will come. We have heard a whisper of hope and we have heard that its day will come. We have heard a hint of love and we have faith its day will come. We have heard of the birth of the Christ-child and we have faith this day is here! Welcome to Christmas and Merry Christmas to one and all!

The Angel Gabriel appeared to Zachariah in the Temple and announced the birth of John. When Zachariah asks, “How can I know?” he is reprimanded and punished with 9 months of being unable to speak. Yet when Gabriel appears to Mary and she asks, “How can this be?” why is she not punished?

Amid the noise and the spirit of the Christmas season, an easy temptation is to let the Incarnation of Jesus be an abstract and distant nicety.

“But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.'” Luke 1:29-30. That moment when the angel Gabriel greets Mary touches me deeply.

Seasonal Reflections | Why pray?
Let us not domesticate Christmas! It is something of a miracle that each year Christmas comes and a peace descends upon the whole earth, as families and friends come together to celebrate. Certainly this year we need consolation of friends and family, and we hope and pray that people can find it, in spite of all the restrictions.
