Today, we are gathered here, my brothers and sisters, to commemorate the faithful departed. The first reading says, all the faithful departed shall abide with the Lord in love. We are here to prayerfully remember our loved ones - friends, family, neighbors, people we knew and some we did not know - who have already gone to the Lord. We celebrate their lives and thank God for the time we spent with them here on earth. We pray that God gives them good rest and peace. We pray that their lives remain an inspiration to us who are still on pilgrimage here on earth.

Blessings | Why pray? | pray the rosary
A priest speaking at a retreat influenced me to use my Rosary to think of something I’m thankful for on each bead, calling it a rosary of gratitude. It takes around 5 minutes but can be life-changing. “Things I used to complain about, I now thank God for,” he told the audience. He instructed us to look even at our difficulties and see the blessings. For instance, having the flu is not fun, but we have plumbing, a bed, clean sheets, access to a washing machine, and so much more that we can be thankful for.

Today, we hear that St. Paul confesses that even though he wants to do “the good,” he falls short; in fact, he doesn’t just fail to do good; he sometimes does what’s wrong.

Growing up in Uganda, all through high school I was active in scouting. I was a Patrol Leader of one of the best Patrols in the country and in East Africa. We won District Championships, National Championships, and represented Uganda in the East Africa Regional Scout Championships in Nairobi, Kenya. Scouting teaches young people cooperation, integrity, belief, respect, innovation, organization, and care for others. The founders of the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides movements, Lord Baden Powell and Lady Olave Baden Powell, are buried in Nyeri, Kenya. It is in Kenya where they settled in the evening of their lives and eventually rested and were buried.

Strengthening family unity | Why pray?
Though they may have names and places that sound foreign to us, listening to and reading St. Paul’s letters is so real. Right off the bat, Paul speaks of Demas, who deserted him because he was “enamored with the present world.” He then lists the others who have left him and mentions that Luke is the only one still with him.

Today’s readings are meant to cause us to focus upon the day of the Lord, drawing near, for the fullness of the Kingdom of God. In seminary, I remember the priest professor over and over writing K.O.G. in caps to stand for the Kingdom of God, and at first, I took it to be only in heaven.
