Strengthening family unity | Why pray?
Let me share a heartwarming story that has inspired me, and I hope it will inspire you too. The parents, particularly the mother of two grown-up boys, are going through a difficult time. Their boys had a fallout and have not talked to each other for over a year. One of the sons hardly talks to his parents and consistently shows an angry face. Communication at home has become scarce.

Return to the Church | Why pray?
Occasionally I do a general cleaning of my room, mainly to get rid of items that have accumulated over weeks. One afternoon, as I was cleaning the drawers of my table, an envelope sent by a friend caught my attention. It had only the word “Enjoy” written on it. I had kept it safe for later use but had forgotten about it.

Jonah is one of the most attractive characters in the Bible. The most beautiful surprise in the book of Jonah is that the most unlikely candidate for holiness, the ever-hated Assyrians, turn to God. The same Assyrians who had destroyed the ten northern tribes of the Hebrews (2 Kgs 17) and destroyed Judah (2 Kgs 19). Even though these people were among the cruelest in biblical history, Jonah managed to bring them to repentance.

None of us likes being laughed at. It hurts our pride. So, we are usually careful not to take risks which could cause others to laugh at us. When it comes to our faith, we are especially careful not to risk ridicule. But today we see Jesus and two other people who dare to risk ridicule with regard to their faith.

The parables Jesus used were excellent teaching tools. We may not understand them at first or second reading, but they engage our minds, are memorable, and invite us to discern meaning. They may speak to us of personality, the senses, the nature of light, the perception of things, or interpersonal relations.

Today’s first sentence from St. Paul’s letter to the Hebrews caught me by surprise. I guess it’s because, like you, I’ve heard and read so many disclaimers for products and programs that promise us great health, pain relief, protection from computer viruses, etc. Then list a series of exceptions to these claims. However, St. Paul does not do that when he says, “Jesus is always able to save those who approach God through him since he lives forever to make intercession for them.”
