Right off the bat, Paul speaks of Demas, who deserted him because he was “enamored with the present world.” He then lists the others who have left him and mentions that Luke is the only one still with him.

Today’s readings are meant to cause us to focus upon the day of the Lord, drawing near, for the fullness of the Kingdom of God. In seminary, I remember the priest professor over and over writing K.O.G. in caps to stand for the Kingdom of God, and at first, I took it to be only in heaven.

Midnight is a rather late hour for a guest to arrive, especially if the guest was not expected. However, it was common for people to travel at night in Palestine because it was cooler. It was considered unwise to journey long in the heat of the midday sun. Unfortunately, when this unexpected guest arrived, his friend had no food in the house. This was not only distressing but also embarrassing for the host. In the Middle East, hospitality is regarded as a sacred duty.

Healing the family | Why pray?
Three of the four gospels tell this powerful story about a withered hand. Each makes mention of this miracle, and all three use the same word to describe this man's condition: "withered hand." The term "withered" describes what once held life, but now the life is gone. (Like a flower.) That which was once strong is now fragile and weak. That which was once beautiful is now twisted and deformed.
