While growing up, I would hear adults say, “He or she has the patience of Job.” At first, I didn’t know who Job was. Still, I could tell by their tone and catching part of the story that the person involved was incredibly patient in a challenging situation—many times, it was said about a husband or wife or boss!

Somewhere within each homily, I usually find myself saying, “my brothers and sisters.” This isn’t something I always did, but with each passing day of priesthood, I find myself increasingly seeing and understanding the reality of Jesus’ words today’s gospel, that “my mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and act on it.”

I can remember way back when I was in eighth grade, after some adolescent gaffe, my Dad said one word, “Think!” As in, think about what you’re doing before you do it! He went on to say, maybe I should hang that word, someplace in my room, just like he had seen this slogan prominently displayed in the offices of IBM computers.
