Several years ago, I read a great article by a local priest, Father Goldrick. He wrote about starting at a new parish, and telling the parishioners that he wanted to get to know them. And, to help them know him, he had written what he called "An Owner’s Manual for your New Pastor."

Today we celebrate the Feast of the Chair of Saint Peter the Apostle. Jesus is giving us a shepherd on earth, a shepherd of souls, who we call the Holy Father, or the Pope.

Jesus poses this question to the disciples: "Do you still not understand?" and that question hung in the air as I listened to this portion of the gospel from Mark. It follows the disciples' concern about not bringing enough bread to eat. Jesus then asks the disciples a series of questions that struck me as good questions for each of us today.

Today’s first reading is a classic. It features the inexperienced and diminutive David against the seasoned and imposing Philistine, in a battle to the death. It doesn’t seem like a fair fight; that either man would ever be forced to face the other. And yet, David is victorious against all odds.

Each January 9 around the world, we celebrate the birth of Venerable Patrick Peyton. However, as you know, this year January 9, we celebrated the Baptism of the Lord. But what makes our offering a Mass of thanksgiving for Father Peyton today providential is that January 10 is the date Patrick Peyton was baptized and became a new creation, an adopted son of God.

In today’s gospel, we witness how Jesus cares for people’s spiritual and physical needs. Mark’s gospel begins abruptly by stating, "When Jesus saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd."
