“Why is this night different from all other nights?” asks the child as his family celebrates the Passover supper, as all observant Jewish families have done each year for 3300 years –since Moses led the Hebrews out of slavery in Egypt. This is not merely a common remembering; each Jewish person at the supper is to take the event as present, as a personal experience of the liberation. This is a way of remembering that is woven into the Holy Scriptures: as God’s saving works are remembered, they indeed become present to us. God continues to save His people. In the Old Testament, the ritual of the Passover is the most intense example of this kind of remembrance.

“In a time of favor I answered you, on the day of salvation I helped you. I have kept you and given you as a covenant for your people.” (Isaiah 49:8). Today’s readings proclaim that Christ, the Word of the Father, is always guiding the personal life of each of us - and all of human history! The life of Saint Patrick is truly a testimony of that.

During Lent, Catholics all over the world come together to pray the Stations of the Cross, and usually we sing a hymn called the Stabat Mater. It’s really a beautiful prayer that we ought to pay more attention to. It’s a poem, really, that was probably written about 800 years ago by a Franciscan, Jacopone da Todi.

In his novel The Great Divorce, the lay theologian C.S. Lewis imagined the arrival of a soul to the afterlife. Lewis describes Hell as a dingy place where it’s always twilight and people are quarrelsome. In his description of Hell, Lewis says that whenever they want, the souls in Hell can make their houses bigger, and farther and farther apart, until each soul is effectively isolated and alone.

Healing the family | Seasonal Reflections
.A great blessing of my life has been to have served at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes in France for 3 years. I returned to reside in the U.S. at the beginning of last year – I’m sure Mother Mary wanted to bring me home during COVID!
