As a young boy growing up, despite the many gifts and talents that I was blessed with, I often thought I was not good, capable, or loved. I grew up with a negative self-image until I met a priest who helped me to see myself as God sees me. He gave me a mantra and told me to repeat it three times a day.

I heard this story from a homilist. “A man died and was admitted into heaven. The Angel gave him a brief tour around the Kingdom. What caught his attention were the numerous pairs of ears hanging all over. So, he asked the Angel, ‘What are those?’ The Angel replied, ‘Those are human ears.’ He asked, ‘But why are they here hanging all over the place?’

Today, we celebrate the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. A tradition relates that Helen, mother of the first Christian Roman emperor, Constantine the Great, discovered the three crosses on which Christ and the two criminals had been crucified near Golgotha. Bishop Makarios identified the true Cross of Christ as the one whose touch immediately returned a dying woman to perfect health.

A little girl was visiting a beautiful cathedral with her aunt. It was late afternoon, and the sun’s rays were streaming through a stained-glass window that featured the figures of several saints. The little girl pointed to one of the figures standing out in the warm, orange glow of the strong sunlight and asked, “Who is that?” “That’s Saint Peter,” the aunt replied.

This Monday, September 5, we mark the 25th anniversary of the entrance into eternity at the conclusion of a life very well lived in service to her bridegroom. I am referring to none other than Mother Teresa of Kolkata and her bridegroom, Lord Jesus Christ.
