"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
Dia de los Muertos | Family Activities | Month of the Holy Souls
Día de los Muertos, or "Day of the Dead," is primarily a Mexican tradition of celebrating the Catholic feasts of All Souls Day and All Saints Day. Although the celebration incorporates pre-Columbian indigenous elements, the modern Día de los Muertos is a reverent way to celebrate the Church’s teaching on the Communion of Saints and to pray for the souls of the deceased. Unfortunately, there are some common misconceptions about the celebration that require clarification.

Celebrating family life | St. Joseph | family prayer | father's day
Father’s Day and Mother’s Day are what I consider to be the “trip wire” holidays … wonderful when they are brunches, BBQs, and rainbows, but potentially miserable if a family is estranged, grieving a parent, struggling with infertility, or painful for a myriad of other reasons. My own relationship with Father’s Day is complicated.

Pizza night is sacred in our house. Pizza night is our Friday-night ritual. We gather together after the week—setting aside preoccupations such as my seemingly never-ending rotation of chore lists and my 5-year-old’s concern that his brother will surreptitiously demolish his newly constructed Duplo bridge. My husband will silence his phone. I will make a salad from whatever veggies are lying around. My mom will arrive bearing home baked goodies. We will eat pizza delivered from our favorite local restaurant.

Advent | family prayer | family tradition
It took most of my adult life, but I finally bought four sets of Advent candles at once. This decision saves me the inevitable post-Thanksgiving scramble to find candles. The previous last-minute candle frenzy mirrored too much of the secular holiday season … go go go. Here is my proposition for this upcoming Advent season: let’s reclaim this time for our families, our sanity, and mostly for our deepening relationship with Jesus. Here are some of my suggestions for doing so this year.

Daniel, my baby-turned toddler, is a destructive force these days. At 18 months, he is a study in superlatives – seeking the tallest slides, biggest toys and making the loudest sounds. Lately, I have taken to thinking of him as Mr. All-In. Like many new toddlers, he leaves a trail behind him of broken toys, open cupboards, and an absurd amount of cracker crumbs.
