I have a vivid memory of my grandmother sitting in the front seat of my car while my husband drove. It was early evening, and I can still hear her east Texas twang as she said, “How can you see a sunset like that and not believe in God?” I Forgot to Notice Sunsets While I can’t remember the colors of the sunset that day, my husband and I have often quoted her question over the last twenty years. But even then, I forgot to notice sunsets. A few years ago, our family hosted a foreign exchange student for a year, and she marveled at the sight of the pink, red, and orange sunsets from our house. She’d stop what she was doing and run outside to watch it and take pictures. It seemed so normal, a sunset. But I would stop what I was doing and go with her. My Instagram feed was full of sunsets that year.

Saint Teresa of Calcutta, commonly known as Mother Teresa, is a household name around the world. You don’t have to be Catholic to know about her actions to serve the poorest of the poor in Calcutta, and if you’re over 30, there’s a good likelihood you remember seeing images of her on television or in print media while she was alive. I can’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t aware of Mother Teresa. She was everywhere from childhood through early adulthood. Her importance and influence snuck up on me. I guess you could say I took her example for granted throughout much of my life. It was only after she passed away and her cause for Sainthood was opened that I really allowed her example to influence my life. Prefer to Listen—Audio version available!

Teaching my 8 and 9 year olds in Faith Formation class last week, I wanted them to realize Lent is more than saying no to dessert for 40 days. Lent is a time for us to change our lives and grow in holiness. Through the three pillars of Lent - fasting (giving up), almsgiving (giving to others) and prayer, we endeavor to develop a closer relationship to God. Our 40 days should be filled with reflection, service and prayer. Explaining Lent to my class and answering their creative questions made me ponder more deeply the things I have chosen to do in observance of Lent.
