We are a family of six with no family living in the same state as us, which means we are a road-tripping family! Every year, we take at least two road trips, and sometimes more, depending on holiday schedules. Visiting extended family is a priority, and driving is the only way to keep it affordable. Each day we spend in the car traversing this beautiful country is not complete until we’ve prayed a Rosary. Life is hectic, and we don’t regularly pray a Rosary together as a family. But during road trips, we never miss. Once we’ve finished lunch, it’s Rosary time. Sometimes we leave after breakfast and sometimes we arrive before dinner, but we’re almost always eating lunch on the go. Having a designated time to pray rather than just hoping that we get to it has made it easy to remember and actually pray it. Since we’ve been so consistent with our Rosary schedule, at least half the time it’s my kids reminding me that it’s time for the Rosary!

Over the summer I had the privilege of attending a women’s retreat at a nearby parish. I jumped at the opportunity to grow in my spirituality and potentially meet some other faithful women in my town. During the retreat, our presenter, Catholic Mom writer Sheri Wohlfert, shared with us a formula for praying with people. Like out loud, spontaneous prayer. I don’t know about you, but this was a fairly foreign concept to me, reserved for the Evangelical Protestants who simply pray differently than we do.

I have mixed emotions about praying the Rosary with my family. As children growing up in a Catholic home, we were “forced” to pray the Rosary, and I always dreaded it. The Rosary seemed to last forever, and there were a million other things I would have rather been doing. Because of this, my prayer time was never fruitful. I recited words, but never actually prayed. Today, rarely does a day go by that I don’t pray at least one decade of the Rosary. If I happen to be having a particularly sleepless night, I can get through more than one Rosary easily. My love and devotion to Mary have grown into an integral part of my faith, and I love having her as my spiritual mother.

Strengthening family unity | Why pray?
Maria Riley describes how she has learned to turn tiny pockets of time over to God. When I run into other moms at church, in the neighborhood, or the grocery store, I find that I am having the same conversation over and over. I say, “Hi! How are you?” and she replies, “Busy!”
