Awaiting Baby Jesus

Rosemary Bogdan imagines what those last few days before the birth of Jesus might have been like. Bethlehem rejoices, as the hymn goes. Might it not be rejoicing already as we come so close to Jesus’ birth? All of creation is awaiting the arrival of the God-man. Surely there is a strange anticipation in the air. Everyone coming to Bethlehem was journeying because they were of the House of David. David’s Line and the Birth of the Savior Perhaps most of them knew that the Messiah would come from David’s line and that He would be born in Bethlehem. How many, inspired by the Holy Spirit, may have been thinking that of all the bustle in the city, perhaps a pregnant woman would come to give birth to the Messiah at that very time?

Peace, Prayer, and Trusting Jesus

What is the reason for my hope? In a word, it is Jesus. But if I had not been given the gift of Faith to believe, I’m quite sure I would believe because of the amazing effects of prayer and the Presence of Jesus in my life. Experiencing Jesus in Prayer There are the hours of Adoration where peace is inexplicable. His Presence permeates the room as I realize He knows all my fears, all my pains, all my hopes. He knows. Remembering Saint Monica's Perseverance in Prayer

Saint Monica was a mother who prayed with such patient tenacity that we are still admiring her motherhood over 1500 years later. She prayed for some fifteen years for her son (Saint) Augustine and even longer for her husband and mother-in-law. All three came into the Church before their deaths. Of her three children, Saint Monica worried the most about Augustine. When Augustine left his mother in search of truth among philosophies far from her devout Christian faith, she never ceased to weep and to pray until her son gladdened her heart with his conversion to ardent faith and became one of the princes among the Church’s theologians. (Magnificat August 2024, p. 381) As we know, Augustine became a great saint and a Doctor of the Church. His mother’s prayers were answered most generously. God is good.

Alzheimer's and a Rosary Awakening

My mother suffered from Alzheimer’s disease for over a decade, very debilitated for most of that time, unable to walk, scarcely able to talk or recognize the people who loved her most. My three youngest children had never known her in any other condition and yet, inexplicably, each still had a relationship with her.
