Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
When our children and grandchildren were young, we occasionally would get them small toy balsa wood gliders. The planes were about twelve inches in length and wingspan. We helped the kids gently piece together the few fragile parts. There was much anticipation.

In the year 2009, the Gallup Group released a study of the “happiest cities in the United States.” Boulder, Colorado with its beautiful vistas was number one, while Honolulu in Hawaii with its great tropical weather and laid-back lifestyle was number three. Tucked between these two big and beautiful cities was the little town of Holland, Michigan, which came in as number two. Many people were curious about what made little Holland one of the happiest places in the United States.

It is the classic tale by French novelist Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870) about Edmond Dantes, who spends years in prison unjustly but escapes to seek revenge on the enemies who framed him. Between 1934 and 1975, at least four versions were produced under the title The Count of Monte Cristo.

My own relationship with Father’s Day is complicated.

Immaculate Heart of Mary | Venerable Patrick Peyton | family prayer | pray the rosary
In 1917 the world was at war and Europe was the battlefield. On the periphery, far from the centers of power, Our Lady chose to reveal her message of Peace to three young shepherds in the Portuguese countryside. On another part of that periphery, in rural western Ireland, lived another boy about the same age. He too was being schooled in that message in his poor but happy home as they prayed the Holy Rosary every night.
