Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
We just returned from World Youth Day in Lisbon. Our experience was uplifting as it unfolded a radiant tapestry of faith, unity, and inspiration. Under the theme "Mary, Wake up the Youth of the World!" over 1.5 million young souls from diverse corners of our Earth converged in Portugal to renew their commitment to Christ. This event, a beacon of youthful zeal and deepened faith, is a testament to the power of Mary's intercession and to the impact of a faith community united in hope.

“I don’t know what’s going to become of you!” How many parents have said that to their children? Or how many of us have grown up hearing this? Maximilan Kolbe was a naughty child. Whenever Maximilian Mary Kolbe heard this comment, his reaction was, “I prayed very hard to Our Lady to tell me what would happen to me.”

Strengthening family unity | Why pray?
Saint Matthew’s emphasis on Jesus' wondrous deeds enables him to reveal Jesus’ true Messianic identity. In the Old Testament, Moses commanded the sea with his rod; Joshua with the Ark of the Covenant; Elisha with the prophet's mantle, but Jesus calms the Sea of Galilee with His Word.

Daily Family Prayer | Rosary with kids | how to pray the rosary
Neither my husband nor I grew up Catholic, so we are sort of making up this Domestic Church thing as we go. Of course, we have great witnesses of Catholic family life that we can look to for examples, but not having lived it ourselves as children, sometimes imagining what that means just isn’t on our radar. One of these areas is family prayer. We both knew we wanted that to be an integral part of our children’s memories of growing up, an indispensable aspect of our family culture. But what does it look like? How do we start? Most importantly, how do we make it something joyful, something that draws our children’s hearts to Jesus rather than something they hem and haw about?

Holy lives of inspiration | Why pray?
Today’s readings are a great way to round out our weekday Masses. In the reading from the Book of Exodus, we have a recap from Moses of all God has done for the Israelites; everything from hearing the voice of God speaking from a fire to leading them out of slavery in Egypt to overcoming mightier nations so that they may have their own land. Moses reminds them so that they will fix and know in their heart that the Lord is God of heaven and earth and that there is no other.

Holy lives of inspiration | Learn more about our faith
Saint Lawrence was a deacon in the early Church in Rome. He was martyred for the faith four days after Pope Sixtus and six other deacons under the persecution of Emperor Valerian. St. Lawrence, when asked to turn over the Church’s money and valuables to the Emperor, gathered the poor and proclaimed that they were the Church’s real treasure.
