Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
“Put your house in order for you are about to die.” Those words from the prophet Isaiah reminded me of relatives and friends who may also have been told those words. I can only imagine what their reaction might have been.

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest … My yoke is easy and my burden light.” (Matt 11: 28, 30) These are among the most inviting and comforting words of the Lord - yet they can seem elusive to us at times. Today, let us ask the great saint whose memory we celebrate today, Kateri Tekakwitha, for her prayer, example, and guidance, for she indeed is a great one who lived them.

The first morning glory blossom recently appeared in our garden. The plant climbs and clings to the fence in the background. Each year, we await the invisible seeds to sprout, and we watch as the plant begins to trail and bring forth flowers. We marvel at the depth of color and the vitality of the growing vine. The background is an important part of the picture.

On Monday, July 11, the U.S. President unveiled the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe to date captured by NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope. Thousands of galaxies – including the faintest objects ever observed in the infrared – have appeared in Webb’s view for the first time showing us a slice of this vast universe.

I attended a picnic recently and felt I could have been among the walking dead. I do not say this to disparage anyone. It had been several years since I last saw some of the attendees and people who I once knew to be vibrant were now wrinkled and some bent over. They did not appear to be people like the ones Isaiah described today, people with hearts that trembled as trees of the forest tremble in the wind. At one point, I had to ask myself to what extent had my own appearance changed.

Celebrating family life | Why pray?
Today’s gospel is one that gets a reaction. For some, it’s a justification to say God is unreasonable. For others, it’s a reason to look more deeply into our relationships with God, our families, and our friends.
