There is, however, much that God wishes to communicate to us about Himself through the words of the inspired authors.

Today, a light has shone upon us, for the Lord is born for us. This is truly a holiday booster maybe not as colorful as the article I read, about the long lines of giddy kids in candy-striped pants, toddlers in holiday shirts adorned with tiny Christmas trees, kids wearing thick Irish sweaters, moms and dads, cradling paper cups of hot coffee waiting the for arrival of the jolly, white-bearded man in black boots and red velvet suit.

I am blest to have served as a priest for 17 years in our Holy Cross ministries in Peru. I love Christmas in Peru. As night falls Christmas Eve there is a quiet that settles, a sense of waiting. Christmas Eve Mass is celebrated around 10 pm. The Churches are packed for beautiful celebrations as the feast begins and people return to their homes, yet there is still a sense of waiting – until midnight!

Seasonal Reflections | Why pray?
When I listen to Mary proclaim the greatness of the Lord I am drawn to the words from the Sound of Music: the hills are alive with songs we sing for a thousand years filling hearts with the sound of music. In recalling the great things that God did for her, Mary’s Magnificat is inviting us to recall the great things that God has done for us.

If today's gospel sounds familiar, it's because we just heard it on Sunday! (And, we've also heard it earlier in Advent too.) But, at times, we need God's Word to come back at us again so that it moves us from thought to action.

Many of our health care workers and public servants feel crushed by the demands upon them to care for so many people at risk during the pandemic. Hospitals fear collapse from another round of pandemic surging. Exhaustion and depression are stalking many people due to isolation and mixed messages about ways to cope with health and safety. Today, December 20, is the darkest day of the year with the fewest hours of daylight.
