Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
Parenthood | family life | raising kids in the faith
There is a perennial perplexity of parenting: discerning the best course of action from among many good contenders. Case in point, last night when I got home late from the last pick-up. We have five kids and there are lots of great activities they are involved in — cross country, volleyball, basketball, student council, space club, driver’s ed (our first! Yikes!), debate, etc.

Charity | Family Activities | corporal works of mercy
With Thanksgiving and Christmas rapidly approaching, many families like to get into the season by donating to their local food banks. Food can drives and other charity programs are a common part of the holiday season when many people are feeling more generous, grateful, and charitable. Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, I worked as a youth minister, and our youth group assisted with organization and distribution at the local food bank. I grew up giving to food banks, but after several years of serving the poor, I’ve learned quite a few surprising facts about food banks and donation needs.

Holy lives of inspiration | Learn more about our faith
Yesterday, after our groundbreaking at the Father Peyton Center in Easton, we had a wonderful reception for our guests and our Holy Cross Family Ministries team. Later that evening, I thought about the conversation at our table and the topic of the first reading: wisdom. I thought about the expression "that with age comes wisdom." I certainly hope so!

As you might be aware, the Family Rosary Crusade that eventually became Holy Cross Family Ministries was founded by Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C., because of a healing he received from tuberculosis after the medical doctors had told him that they did not have anything they could do about his illness. He turned to prayer through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother, and he was cured of that illness. The healing made him make a commitment to go out into the whole world and remind families about the power of prayer. Holy Cross Family Ministries is an organization that was founded on gratitude for a healing that was received by now Venerable Patrick Peyton.

God can teach us in many ways. Yesterday, I felt like the wedding guest from the parable of the man who showed up at the feast wearing the wrong garment. As I joyfully sang out the last line of “Amazing Grace” at Mass. One of our friends here at the Peyton Center, Virginia, tapped me on the shoulder and pointed over to Father Pinto, who pointed to his chasuble, and, for some strange reason, with all the other priests, was wearing white vestments while I proudly was wearing green.
