Celebrating family life | Seasonal Reflections
One of our grandsons recently celebrated his tenth birthday. On the eve of his big day, I pointed out that he was adding a digit to his age and would do so again when he turned one hundred. It was an interesting thought! I also mentioned that my tenth birthday was in 1960. After a few moments, he observed that I was born in 1950. We pay attention to the number of our age. When we turn multiples of five or ten, we attribute greater significance. Of course, every year is significant.

Probably at some time, we have all had the experience of being inspired by a speaker’s words. Perhaps their passion, depth of knowledge, insight, or how they expressed some life wisdom touched a chord deep within us. Maybe it occurred to us, “I never thought this way before.” Our way of thinking experienced a conversion.

Several years ago, a hunter acquired an unusual hunting dog. It was the only dog of its kind that was capable of walking on water. To show off his prized possession, he invited a friend to go hunting with him. Eventually, they shot a few ducks, which fell into the river. He ordered his dog to fetch the birds. When the dog ran on water to fetch the birds, he expected a compliment about his amazing dog, but did not receive one.

During our children’s time in elementary school, there was always something happening – a full calendar of things to anticipate. We supported them through book reports, spelling tests, math problems, poems to memorize, and performances to prepare. There were also faith matters, prayers to remember, holiness to embrace, and mysteries to ponder.

The other day I did the scariest thing in the world. I wrote on my calendar times to be quiet — just be quiet and listen to God. I will attend Eucharistic Adoration and walk in the local park for three hours every week—for starters.

Around here, so far, it has been a comparatively mild winter. While many regions have had significant snows, we have been spared. There are weeks of winter to go. Years ago, when our children were in grade school during the wintertime, sometimes there would be a mid-morning burst of storminess. Snow would move in, and adjusted weather forecasts would call for more of the same throughout the day. It was rare, but when conditions were predicted to get more challenging, schools would dismiss early.
