Chucuito is the name of the remote rural parish in the Andes Mountains of Southern Peru, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, where I was assigned as a deacon, before being ordained a priest. I thank God for how my 3 years there as a young priest formed me in profound ways. My first Feast of All Souls there was an amazing experience.

In the Luke's Gospel we hear the moving story of Jesus meeting a woman who had a debilitating illness. For 18 years she was bent over, incapable of standing erect. Jesus saw her and simply said, “Woman you are set free of your infirmity.” He laid his hands on her and she immediately stood up and gave glory to God.

Today’s Gospel and Fr. Leo’s homily from yesterday reminded me of the need to have patient trust in Jesus. The other day driving down a busy single-lane road, the car in front of me stopped to make a left turn, except it couldn’t because there was a long line, as far as I could see, of headlights streaming toward us, preventing that car from turning.

That was quite a list of sins or human imperfections that Saint Paul detailed for us his letter to the Galatians! It is interesting to note that sin, in all its disguises, have been around from the earliest of times. The good news is that Jesus came among us to show us a better way of life. The Kingdom of God is among us. We are temples of the Holy Spirit, and our work is to glorify God who is within each one of us.

"Part of the problem, Mitch, is that everyone is in such a hurry," Morrie said. "People haven't found meaning in their lives, so they're running all the time looking for it. They think they'll find it in the next car, the next house, the next job. Then they find those things are empty, too, and they keep running." Yet, in order for people to find meaning in their lives, they should stop running and turn to God in solitude, silence, and prayer. Then they would find what they are looking for. St. Paul expresses amazement at so many of the earlier followers of Jesus abandoning the Good News, the Gospel that Jesus preached, and opting for other gospels, other messengers, and other teachings. It is difficult to assess all the reasons why this happened then and continues to happen today, but there are some truths contained in the scriptures that may offer reasons why.
