I have a young friend, Sophia, who’s four years old. Her grandmother told me recently that when Sophia heard that her grandfather was going to have some eye surgery, she immediately and quite naturally started to talk to God about the operation, very much like she was conversing and like He was talking back!

This Sunday we celebrated Father’s Day and I find myself continuing to think of and give thanks for my father. John Laurence Phalan. My Grandfather John wanted to call my father John as he was the first and only boy child. My Grandmother Helen wanted to call him Laurence. I don’t know why … They settled on John Laurence but then everybody called him Larry. My grandmother won that one!

A number of times I’ve had people come at me with an attack against the Rosary saying. “Look here what the bible says about your repetitive prayers of the Rosary …” As if our repetition of The Hail Mary was this sort of “Babbling of the Pagans” that Jesus criticizes. This is not what’s going on in the Rosary.

Pope Francis has been offering some beautiful reflections on prayer recently in his weekly audiences. Recently, he began by noting accounts of the origin of evil in the Book of Genesis. Pope Francis reminded us that we also hear of good men like Abel, Seth, Enoch and Noah. While evil seemed to be driving human events, there were also people who were living a different way.
