What do you do when you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t go back to sleep? It was 3:30am, made a cup of tea, sat on my screened in porch taking in the silence, retired to my room, and gave some thought to this homily. In the today's reading from Genesis, Abraham's wife, Sarah, dies, and Abraham seeks to find a place for her burial. The scene resurrects thoughts of their marriage; and the playful exchange about her conceiving a child in her old age.

Love thy Neighbor | Strengthening family unity
This gospel today reminded me of the Old Testament story about Ruth, the daughter-in-law of Naomi. Naomi’s sons married; but both sons died and the daughters-in-law, according to tradition, were free to return to their original homeland. But ever faithful Ruth would not abandon Naomi, saying to her: "Wherever you go I shall go, wherever you live so I shall live; your people will be my people and your God will be my God too."

I enjoyed the dialogue that Abraham and God had in Genesis, where God spells out some common rules, assuring Abraham that God would never abandon him. God even tells Abraham that his wife would conceive in old age! Abraham laughed. We were not told how God reacted, but Abraham certainly thought God had a sense of humor...

I was asked to share my thoughts on Mary Gardens. I never had a Mary Garden. I desired to have one but instead had to be content with having a Joseph Garden.

We are issued a challenge by Paul and Jesus today, to become perfect as Jesus is perfect. The perfection I am speaking of is spiritual perfection; imitating Jesus to the best of our abilities. We need to grow our good self, to become our better self...until we can achieve our best possible self.
