I enjoyed the dialogue that Abraham and God had in Genesis, where God spells out some common rules, assuring Abraham that God would never abandon him. God even tells Abraham that his wife would conceive in old age! Abraham laughed. We were not told how God reacted, but Abraham certainly thought God had a sense of humor...

May we learn to be the king’s good servant, but God’s first. Saints John Fisher and Thomas More, two learned and devout Catholics, were put to death by King Henry the VIII because each of them refused to support Henry’s intention to divorce his wife and marry another woman - in opposition to Catholic teaching and papal authority. I had an opportunity to visit Newport, R.I. a city on the Atlantic coast, known for its summer residences for the rich and famous. The city has opulent mansions some of which are still inhabited while others are managed by the Preservation Society which collects tourist admissions and funds from other sources. Newport, Rhode Island once had 24 light houses that provided mariners a beacon of light warning them of danger.

What was one message coming through the Scriptures today? There were at least four personalities all of whom I found to be inspiriting. First there was Justin, the saint of the day. Then there was Ben Sera whose poetic words in the Book of Sirach I found to be so spiritual. Lastly there was Tobit with his wife Anna who could be the neighbors next door. All four were seekers of the Truth, good to the core.
