In recent weeks and as a result of the pandemic occasioned by the Coronavirus many Catholic Christians across the world have been unable to break bread with Jesus, to celebrate mass with a priest present and to receive the body and blood of the Lord.They have not been able to hear the words that Jesus spoke to his disciples while he was still with them; “take and eat, for this is my body, take and drink for this is my blood”.

Alone with the Scriptures that were presented to us from the Book of Numbers I could almost experience the anger and frustration that God’s chosen people directed towards God, Moses blaming them for the hardship they were experiencing as they journeyed from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. In contrast I thought of our world today and the effects of the coronavirus on the lives of millions of people across the globe. I have not been hearing anger at God. Frustration yes with the loss of jobs, fear about the future but not blame, finding fault with God.

The scourge of the Coronavirus has brought pain and heartache to millions but many of us are also rediscovering some values that appear to have been forgotten in recent years among them concern and caring for one another and yes reaching out and touching one another something we are discouraged from doing during this crisis.

I noticed our receptionist was changing the water in a small glass container that appeared to have a floating flower in it. I told her the flower was beautiful, but she added that it also contained a goldfish. It was a birthday gift. She said the old water had become stale and soiled, and that new water would provide new life for her fish.
