The Rosary was never my favorite form of prayer. In fact, I used to complain about how repetitive it was. I really struggled to pray it, and I struggled with the fact that the Church held the Rosary in such high regard. It was obvious that the Rosary was a significant form of prayer in the lives of many Catholics, including many saints. If they all upheld the Rosary’s value, who was I to ignore it?

On this 31st Anniversary of Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C.'s death on June 3, 1992, we celebrate with a moving story of the power of the family Rosary from PRAY: THE STORY OF PATRICK PEYTON, producer and co-writer Megan Harrington. Growing up my parents made us — it was not a choice or an option — be in the kitchen at 7 am before school to pray the Rosary. They believed in its promises and the power of prayer. Gathering a herd of 11 children is not an easy task, especially in the morning. I’d like to tell you that their example launched me into the daily practice from the time I was a small girl until today, but unfortunately, it didn’t. The seed was planted, however, and I would be reminded of its effectiveness many times over the course of my life. I am forever grateful to my parents, who were the first witnesses of the faith.

Today we will pray the Fifth Glorious Mystery: The Coronation of Mary. Long ago, it was the mother of the king, not his wife, who took the role of queen. A king may have had many wives, so his heir would be brought up by his mother. This meant the mother had the most influence on her son and, therefore, the most honor from him.

Today we will pray the Fourth Glorious Mystery: The Assumption of Mary into Heaven. So much of pregnancy is spent protecting and nourishing our baby’s body. This continues after birth, of course, but during pregnancy, mothers are especially careful of what they eat, drink, inhale, and do in order to protect the growing baby. From cleaning products to alcohol and medicine, our foremost concerns are their effects on the baby in our womb.

Today we will pray the Second Glorious Mystery: The Ascension. To meditate upon the Ascension, as a pregnant mother, can truly bring peace and joy. The time that Christ spent on earth, from His Resurrection to His Ascension, was a time of teaching and preparation for the Apostles.

Today we will pray the First Glorious Mystery: The Resurrection. The Resurrection of Jesus is the necessary truth and foundation of our Catholic faith. Jesus has died but has risen from the dead. Jesus comes out of the darkness and into the light of life. The Cross comes before the Resurrection. Without the Cross, there would be no Resurrection.
