In today's gospel, scribes have come from Jerusalem to see Jesus. No doubt, they want to investigate the wonders that have been attributed to Him. Their conclusion is astonishing. Despite His attention to prayer and compassion, they say that Jesus can cure illness and expel demons because He is in league with the devil, an accusation we still hear today.

I am blessed to have served as a priest for 17 years in our Holy Cross ministries in Peru. I love Christmas in Peru. As night falls on Christmas Eve, a quiet settles, along with a sense of waiting. Christmas Eve Mass is celebrated around 10 p.m. The Churches are packed for beautiful celebrations as the feast begins, and people return to their homes, yet there is still a sense of waiting—until midnight!

Healing the family | Return to the Church
Department stores, bus terminals, big hotels, and many other places where humans congregate often have a Lost and Found counter or section. People who have lost something can address themselves to whoever is in charge and reclaim whatever they have lost. What is impressive about a Lost and Found department is the number of valuable belongings that are never reclaimed. Somehow it seems their owners were either too lazy to reclaim them, too busy with some other concern, or too forgetful to have noticed their loss.

Return to the Church | Strengthening family unity
Anyone who has visited ancient cities such as Jerusalem, Babylon, Rome, Athens, Sparta, Memphis and Thebes, is shocked at how immense and beautiful these ancient cities must have looked in the prime of their days. I have been blessed to visit Rome, Jerusalem, and Memphis – which is not too far away from modern day Cairo. I was shocked looking at the gigantic archeological sites and how big the buildings must have been.

These are three questions that many people ask with sincerity—they ask them honestly: Why can't I pray in nature, which truly lifts my spirit up to God? Why do I have to be with others if I pray better on my own? Why couldn't I substitute my personal prayer for Mass if I'm very busy? I want to address these questions with gentleness and love because, as I said, I think many people ask them sincerely. And I'd like to begin with our Gospel passage which might be able to set us in the right direction.

Human life, in many cases, seems to be an undulating movement, a falling apart, a pulling together, a gloomy night, and then a sunny day. And in our own lives, going away from God and coming back to God.
