When the court officers brought the apostles in and made them stand before the council of elders, the high priest questioned them. They said the apostles were given orders not to mention Jesus’ name, yet they filled the crowds with their teaching. Peter did not deny their accusation and boldly accused them of being complicit in the death of Jesus. They became infuriated and wanted to put the apostles to death.

Today’s first reading is a classic. It features the inexperienced and diminutive David against the seasoned and imposing Philistine, in a battle to the death. It doesn’t seem like a fair fight; that either man would ever be forced to face the other. And yet, David is victorious against all odds.

Seasonal Reflections | Why pray?
When I listen to Mary proclaim the greatness of the Lord I am drawn to the words from the Sound of Music: the hills are alive with songs we sing for a thousand years filling hearts with the sound of music. In recalling the great things that God did for her, Mary’s Magnificat is inviting us to recall the great things that God has done for us.

God's justice, compassion, and healing power can do amazing things, big and small, if you let Him in, if you invite Him into your life. This week, I had two writing deadlines due the same day. The first was today’s homily, and the second was a family Christmas letter. As I prayed and reflected on the tasks at hand, I had an inspiration for how to approach a Christmas letter in these unusual times.

In the first three Chapters of the Book of Genesis, we hear about the creation of the world and all things in it. The story of creation is not a documentary that yields an accurate historical or scientific data. It is a spiritual lesson in story form telling us as much about God as it does about creation. Please notice that there are two stories of creation.
