Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
Sometime during my younger years, I heard the expression: that someone was taking up the mantle. Taken literally, it didn't make sense because the only "mantle" I knew/ was the ledge over the opening of a fireplace. But with time, I learned that it meant a person taking up the responsibilities for someone else/ just like we heard about in today's first reading.

Today's readings brought me back to one of my first discoveries about healing. Like most kids, I had my share of skinned knees and elbows that were treated by this fluorescent red colored liquid called mercurochrome. These scrapes would heal in about a week, that is, until one trip to the ocean where the saltwater miraculously sped up the process. That was my "aha moment" with the healing properties of salt.

"Are we almost there yet?" That's a question posed by every child on what seems to be an endless car ride. Now, there plenty of adults asking a similar question, "Are we almost ready to return to normal?"

Strengthening family unity | Why pray?
Today's readings deal with danger, departures, and the sadness of being apart ... topics and emotions that many people are presently dealing with to one degree or another. We are looking to friends and family for a sense that someone else is in our boat and rowing with us. The gift is that through friendship in the Lord, though apart, we are united.

As I prayed with today’s readings, I was drawn to the last part of the first reading, the part where it says, “And when they arrived, they called the Church together and reported what God had done with them and how He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.”
