Today's readings deal with danger, departures, and the sadness of being apart ... topics and emotions that many people are presently dealing with to one degree or another. We are looking to friends and family for a sense that someone else is in our boat and rowing with us. The gift is that through friendship in the Lord, though apart, we are united.

As I prayed with today’s readings, I was drawn to the last part of the first reading, the part where it says, “And when they arrived, they called the Church together and reported what God had done with them and how He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.”

I’m reminded how long ago, as a college student, I was walking with a priest friend and asked if he could hear my Confession. He obliged, and I have never forgotten the experience, realizing in real-time, that the Holy Spirit was at work as we walked along the Charles River in Boston.

"Who do you want to be …?” That was the question posed many years ago, to a young man named Dan Crenshaw by a friend of his father who he admired. Crenshaw answered he wanted to be a Navy Seal, but the older man who had served in the military clarified by saying: “Not what do you want to do but who do you want to become?”
