In today’s reading from Isaiah and the Gospel of Matthew, the mercy of God is on full display. The question is, what does that mean for us? Does God want to remind us that He’s here for us like he was for Hezekiah and his disciples? Of course, it’s reassuring to know that when we need more time that God hears us. It’s also good to know that God understands that our bodies require food.

As I read and reflected over today’s first reading, my first reaction was: this could be in an epic movie scene! It doesn't end harshly but rather with a gentle and simply-powerful message.

Today’s 1st reading caused me to wonder: “Are we relying too much on man and science right now…given our current situation?”

Today we commemorate the First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church. We venerate and ask the intercession of this small but significant group of converts to the faith. Thankfully, most of us will not become martyrs, however, this doesn’t mean that we’re not called to live out our faith courageously.

As I read and prayed about today’s first reading, even though it dates back over two thousand years, the message seemed fitting for today. Now, most of us don’t receive threatening letters from powerful kings or other world leaders. Still, we do encounter other challenges to our faith in God.
