Mass with Children | raising kids in the faith
CatholicMom.com contributor, Megan Cottam reflects on the ways young children naturally witness to the faith. “Why do you bother bringing your kids to Mass? Isn’t it a hassle?” “Religious concepts are for older folks. Little kids are too young to understand.” Any of this sound familiar? For us moms with small kiddos, it can be daunting to handle the rejection that comes at us when we are doing our best to raise our children in the faith.

Venerable Patrick Peyton | museum of family prayer
Over fifteen years ago, a friend invited me to Mass at The Father Peyton Center in North Easton, Massachusetts. On the ride there, she recounted the remarkable life of a holy man, devoted to the Blessed Mother, with an almost single-minded desire to help families pray together, especially the Rosary. It would be the first time I heard Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C.'s message that, "The family that prays together stays together." I was intrigued and a little excited to visit this prayerful place and learn more about him, but little did I know how special this now Venerable priest would become to me as he's been for decades for families across the globe.

Love thy Neighbor | Return to the Church
How many times I yearned to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings" ~Luke 13: 34b When I was growing up as a kid, we had chickens at home. Have you ever seen a mother hen caring for her young? If she sees an eagle circling overhead, she instinctively gives a warning sound, and the baby chicks run to hide under her wings. When dark storm clouds fill the sky and thunder roars and lightning flashes, she quickly makes a sound that draws her brood to her. As night approaches and the shadows lengthen, she gives a quiet call that gathers her young to rest under her wings.

Return to the Church | Why pray?
Last week, Father Fred spoke of the benefits of the first disciples going out two by two. Today’s gospel brought me back to that message as it connects to our salvation. Back in 2010, I went to Rome for meetings about Father Peyton’s Cause for Sainthood. I arrived one day before Father Jim Phalan, so, unlike the disciples, I was traveling alone. Everything went fine during the day, even the evening, until about 10:30 or 11 pm when I returned to the monastery where I was staying.
