I’ve had the privilege of spending the last seven weeks participating in a prayer group called "Invitation to Personal Prayer." I knew I had a prayer life, but honestly, I’ve spent so many of the last survival parenting years as a “desperate” pray-er, (if that’s a word). My morning prayer times came seldom and far between, because I couldn’t get up any earlier than my children, so my prayers came during the day in small desperate pleas for the Lord to help me put out whatever fire was currently underway.

Some of you may remember a popular TV program in the 1980s called “Family Ties.” It starred a young Michael J. Fox. His character, Alex Keaton, was that of a son with very different economic and political views than his parents and sister. I loved the show because, in the end, despite their often-comical disagreements, their love for one another superseded the biggest challenge of their day.

Anyone involved in managing schools, parishes, businesses, or workplaces where there are several employees knows that the parable of the workers in the vineyard is not a recommended model for dealing with employees. Giving equal wages for unequal work or giving unequal wages for equal work will always cause unrest.
