During a retreat, I was giving on a military base in Alabama, the base's chaplain mentioned the Rosary as a powerful prayer. Although I've heard that message many times before, Father's next statement, "The Rosary ends many wars," sparked something new deep inside my heart. As a Portuguese woman, I've known this on some level from the Blessed Mother's message at Fatima, but what he said next transformed how I relate to the Rosary. After a short pause and with palpable passion, he concluded, "Wars that rage in our world, our minds, our bodies, our spirits, and our families."

Over fifteen years ago, a friend invited me to Rosary and Mass at The Father Peyton Center in North Easton, Massachusetts. En route, she recounted the remarkable life of a holy man, devoted to the Blessed Mother, with an almost single-minded desire to help families pray together, especially the Rosary. It would be the first time I heard the message of Father Patrick Peyton, C.S.C., "The family that prays together stays together."

Some days in the Liturgical season, by their cultural and religious nature, lend themselves more towards celebrating, such as Christmas and Easter, than others. However, it seems a missed opportunity not to find some way to acknowledge, and yes celebrate, every Solemnity, Memorial, or Feast in the Catholic Church. For families, feast days can offer beautiful teachable moments, special time set apart for living our faith, and even the creation of lifetime memories. This month, the Church will celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on August 15, commemorating the entry of Mary into heaven—body and soul. The Assumption falls into the category of “Solemnity,” which means it is among the highest rank feast days celebrating a mystery of faith.

St. John the Evangelist bravely stands vigil alongside the Blessed Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross. In the most incredible act of love, Jesus strains to fill His lungs with air, and with just a few words, gives Mary to the world and institutes her spiritual motherhood when He proclaims from the Cross, "Woman, behold your son!" Then He says to the disciple, "Behold your mother!" (John 19:26-27a).

Isaiah 55:6, "Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while he is near," presents to the faithful an urgency to unite ourselves with God. As a teenager, I considered anything religious, especially attending Mass or praying the Rosary, as something older adults engaged in. Seeking time with God was something for retirement when you were winding down living your life—where could you find the time with school, work, family, and leisure activities engulfing every time slot on your calendar? Then, my first friend died unexpectedly, never reaching adulthood, never mind retirement; suddenly, I realized tomorrow is not promised, and my priorities were misaligned.
