Saint John has been busy doing what some of us find to be a chore during the Christmas season. He has been writing letters. His letters are quite a bit different from some of the Christmas letters we may have received from friends and relatives.

It was a weekday Advent mass that I remember using a saying from St. John of the Cross that offers one more meaning to our celebration of Christmas Eve. First and foremost, we are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, the son of God who came to live among us as a man. But John of the Cross fleshed it out for me when he said, “where there is no love, put love and you will draw out love.”

I recently read an article about couples celebrating 50-plus years of marriage. The room was filled with about 75 couples on the dance floor with a combined 3,521 years of marriage!
