Reflections of Family and Faith
"The family that prays together stays together." - Venerable Patrick Peyton
Yesterday as I read today’s gospel, I remembered a phrase, something that a friend said to a group of us, that has stayed with me for all these years. We were sitting around talking, probably trying to solve the problems of the world, or at least in our small corner of the world, when the conversation was going in the wrong direction … that’s when one guy said, “Hey, stay in the light!”

In our first reading today from the Acts of the Apostles, we are given a glimpse of what the Christian culture of the early followers of Christ looked like. They were of one heart and soul, they held everything in common, they testified to the resurrection of Jesus, grace was upon them, there was no needy person among them, etc. This culture of the early Christians is what inspired the religious communities in the Church, where all is held in common, people live in communities, and life revolves around common prayer, and a common table.

Holy lives of inspiration | Return to the Church
My name is Nicodemus. My name means I was a victor among the people. One night my wife asked where I was going. "Out," I said. "You know the Pharisees. It's urgent." She said, "But Nicodemus, it's midnight. Is it that young troublemaker again? You haven't been yourself since you heard about Jesus. You said He was dangerous."

Divine Mercy Sunday | Trust and Mercy | prayer
Spring is well underway — with all its gusty unpredictability, and I'm left with a lot of mud on my hands. It's on our shoes, in the yard, and seemingly on flat surface of my home on some days. I can't help but be grateful on so many levels. Mud means spring, and spring means many of my favorite things all at one time. There’s sunshine and new life and outside activity. This all calls for an increase in trust, whether it’s when one of my kids is on a 2000-pound horse or behind the wheel of a moving vehicle. The trust I have to embrace is pretty huge, but it's nothing like the trust I'm called to have.

Daily Family Prayer | Easter season | family life
Easter is the highest point in the liturgical year as we celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. As a Catholic mother, I celebrate Easter Sunday with my family and savor the joy of the day. It is all beautiful. But the Easter season lasts 50 days, and there is great reason for us to keep that spirit alive with both ourselves and our families.

Healing the family | Strengthening family unity
A man on a business trip for about two weeks went out for breakfast. When the waitress came to his table, she asked, "What can I get you?" The man paused and said, "I'll tell you what. I'd like the special, but I want my toast burned to a crisp, my bacon like a piece of rubber, my coffee weak, and when you bring me the food, I want you to yell at me." Puzzled, the waitress said, "What are you, crazy?" "No," said the man, "I'm just homesick."
