In the first of the two Scripture readings today, Amos continues to rail against the abuses inflicted on the poor by unscrupulous people, cheating them in the sale of wheat that was so essential to their daily diet. Fake baskets with a false bottom were used to hold wheat. It was not uncommon to touch the scales to inflate the weight while items were being weighed. Evil and greed on display.

As many of you know, I am blest to have lived at Lourdes in France for three years serving in our Family Rosary mission there. I’m looking forward to returning for a month in September, Lord willing. I have seen the place up close, so I can say that there have been thousands of physical healings – cures! It’s the real deal. Yet one could counter: there have been millions of sick people who have visited Lourdes. What about the rest of them?

I have found that seeking God’s will in our everyday experience takes time – to trust and reflect. Sometimes this approach stretches our patience and our willingness to wait and learn. It is a grace for which to pray.

Yesterday, Father Boby John using the gospel account of the disciples being tossed about at sea, encouraged us to follow their lead and awaken Jesus for our own needs in prayer. A few hours later, while standing at a hair salon with my Mom, a woman approached and said Father, can I have a blessing? I could really use one!

My grandpa, whom we call Big G, got me into gardening at a young age. He used to grow fruits, flowers, and vegetables in pots and plots that would take up our entire backyard. Once I was old enough to assist him, he took me under his wing as his gardening apprentice. He was a seasoned gardener who had grown every plant you could imagine, and in his years had gotten pretty good at what he did. We would start the season by growing our plants from seeds in the basement. After a few weeks they began to germinate and sprout, and we let them grow until it was time to bring them outside. I would help Big G move the plants to our plots and raised beds so that they had more room to grow, and eventually produce fruits and vegetables that we were able to enjoy with our family and neighbors. Although Big G called the shots in our garden, my whole family would always take part and enjoy gardening together.
