May begins next week, a perfect time to plan a May Crowning with your littles. My two-year-old daughter Ellen and I put together a super simple and quick May Crowning activity. We did most of it during my son's nap time while I was still unshowered and in my PJs. What is it that G.K. Chesterton famously said (and I use it as a crutch far too often)? “If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.”

Families with school-age children probably more than once have had the experience of not being able to find something important — at a particularly awkward moment. When getting ready for school, an athletic event, or church service, we’ve likely all had to look for “my other shoe,” missing homework, field trip form, clean socks, and the list goes on. Our reflection today is taken from the Gospel of John. Today we hear some of the most reassuring words come from the mouth of Jesus. He tells his disciples that do not let your heart be troubled; trust in God, and trust in me too. These words are words that need to become a sort of a mantra for us, a repeated prayer for us. These are words that need to be engraved on our heart so that we can keep returning to them and keep reminding ourselves under different circumstances what the Lord’s take is on what is going on in our life. “Let not your hearts be troubled; believe in God, and believe also in me.”

Many of us stay informed about current events by tuning in to radio news, catching snippets of TV broadcasts, or reading newspapers. However, a common issue with these news sources is their overwhelming focus on adverse events—illness outbreaks, civil unrest, international conflicts, extreme weather, fires, crimes, corruption, etc. Interestingly, bad news tends to grab our attention more than positive or uplifting stories. Today, however, we celebrate St. Mark, the Evangelist, the bearer of great good news.

In today’s Gospel reading, we encounter a profound message that resonates deeply within each of our lives. As we listen to Jesus’ urgent voice in the scripture from John 12:44-50, we hear Him not just speaking to the crowd, but addressing each of us personally: "He who believes in me believes not in me but in Him who sent me. And he who sees me sees Him who sent me."

Growing up, I noticed that my mother had a profound fondness for raising chickens. There were two primary reasons behind her affection for these feathered creatures. First, the chickens provided a steady supply of fresh eggs, which my mother skillfully transformed into delicious omelets. Second, the chickens themselves served as a source of meat, gracing our table in the form of tasty chicken curry, particularly during special occasions or when we had guests over.
