I recently heard a homily in which the priest said that he loved the readings at the beginning of the Book of Genesis. This priest spoke of how they have a rhythm that describes God’s thoughts and actions that reveal both an order and the goodness of God.

In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus teaches us a powerful lesson: it's not what goes into a person that defiles them, but what comes out of their heart. He warns us about the "evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness" that can lurk within (Mark 7:21-23). This message is a challenge for all of us, but especially for families.

Today, we celebrate the Memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes and the World Day of Prayer for the Sick. We also hear the Blessed Mother’s instruction in the Gospel of John to the waiter, to “Do whatever he tells you.” One day I hope to make a pilgrimage to the Shrine at Lourdes in France. For, it is a place that I have heard about since I was a child, beginning with my mother’s powerful experience of witnessing throngs of people from around the world assisting family, friends, and even strangers who were ill and infirmed in wheelchairs and stretchers to join in the procession and Rosary prayer for all those seeking healing.

Let me start with a scene we have all seen or heard about—people camping outside famous stores for days, waiting to buy the latest phone or the hottest ticket to their favorite artist’s show. One man camping outside a store for three days for his latest smart phone even called it “a spiritual pilgrimage for pixels.” But here’s the irony—a year or two later, that same phone is buried in a drawer, replaced by the next big thing.

“Come, Holy Spirit,” I said as I began a short period of daily personal prayer with my small kids. I closed my eyes, enjoying the momentary silence that fell over the room. Suddenly, I heard my toddler speak. “I’m going to talk to God. God, what do you need?” That simple, heartfelt prayer gripped my heart. Throughout the rest of the day, I continued thinking about this prayer. I marveled at my child’s beautiful simplicity and open vulnerability with God. Throughout Jesus’s public ministry, He looked upon children with love and reverence and held them up as an example: “Let the children come to me, and do not prevent them; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14)
