Over the course of the years in my job at my parish, I have encountered hundreds of moms. These are women from a wide variety of backgrounds, cultures, socio-economic levels, education, and even languages, who meet to learn and worship together. Over time, I’ve heard many of their stories and learned of their sufferings. We have especially prayed for each other's children during times of trial.

Quite often, we tend to relegate holiness and prayer to priests and those in religious life. We know that all people are called to holiness, but when we spend our days in the office or tackling housework while caring for our children, we can slip into a mindset of, "I'm just a layperson, and I can't spend my days in prayer like nuns, so I can't be that holy." On the contrary, we can draw closer to God as we live out in the world, and we can glorify Him with our lives — and in our work.

Over the years my family has done many special things to celebrate the Blessed Mother with little children: Mary crowning, Mary altar, reading about Mary, making a Mary peg doll ... and this year we are going to try a Marian terrarium, only because we do not have a place for a garden. However, the most important bit about celebrating Mary in May is attempting to pray the Rosary daily together as a family.

Certain things in life are easy. Finishing off that pint of ice cream. Scrolling through your Facebook feed. Giving the kids screen time so they’ll stop asking you five million questions. Clearly, these are choices along the path of least resistance. Most days, they take zero effort or thought. And then there’s your marriage: the foundation of the vocation chosen by God. There’s no easy button for prioritizing the covenant you entered before God and your loved ones.

Earlier this week, the arrows began flying. It was words that got me in trouble, and a failure to be precise enough. But I think it was more than that. In hindsight, I see it was a failure to undertake a translation I didn't know was necessary, and may possibly be impossible to carry out; a need to bridge the gap between the language of the believer and non-believer, and perhaps their hearts as well.
